Rockers raise money for ailing musician
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A who's-who of the Twin Cities' 1980s indie-music scene rocked for one of their own.
Soul Asylum bassist Karl Mueller, who is recovering from throat cancer, performs with his band at a benefit to raise money for his medical bills
By Jeff Wheeler, AP They played a sold-out benefit concert Thursday night to raise money for Soul Asylum bassist Karl Mueller, who's recovering from throat cancer.
One of the highlights was a reunion of former Husker Du bandmates Bob Mould and Grant Hart in their first on-stage pairing since Husker Du broke up 16 years ago.
"We've been offered whatever you can imagine to do (a reunion), but we did this for free," Hart told the Star Tribune.
Also performing were ex-Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg, Soul Asylum, a reunited Gear Daddies and the alt-rock "supergroup" Golden Smog.
Mueller, 41, has been out of work since April due to his treatments for cancer, which is now in remission. He was healthy enough to play a set with his band and enjoy some of the other acts.
"Even if I didn't know me, I wouldn't have missed this show for the world," Mueller said backstage.
More than $50,000 was raised to help Mueller with his medical costs.
